About Jeffrey Osborne
Early Life and Family
Jeffrey Osborne was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the youngest of twelve children. His family loved music, and many of his brothers and sisters also became musicians.
His brother, Billy Osborne, was even in the band L.T.D. with him. Jeffrey's father, Clarence "Legs" Osborne, was a well-known trumpet player. He played with famous musicians like Lionel Hampton and Duke Ellington. Jeffrey's father passed away in 1961 when Jeffrey was thirteen years old.
Joining the Band L.T.D.
Jeffrey Osborne began his music career in 1970. He joined an American soul band called "Love Men Ltd." This band later became known as L.T.D.
The band had many popular songs. Some of their hits included "(Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again" (1977) and "Love Ballad" (1976).
At first, Jeffrey was only the drummer. He shared singing duties with his brother Billy. But by 1976, Jeffrey became the main lead singer for the group. He sang lead vocals on L.T.D.'s three No. 1 songs on the U.S. R&B Chart. He also sang on the band's three gold and platinum albums.
Both Jeffrey and his brother left the band in late 1980. They wanted to start their own solo music careers.
Starting a Solo Career
In 1982, Jeffrey Osborne sang the first song for the comedy movie The Toy. Later that year, he released his first solo album, called Jeffrey Osborne.
This album had two popular songs. "On the Wings of Love" and "I Really Don't Need No Light" became hits.
The next year, he released Stay with Me Tonight. This was his first solo album to sell enough copies to be certified gold. It had four more hit songs, like "Don't You Get So Mad" and the title track, "Stay with Me Tonight."
In 1985, Jeffrey Osborne wrote the words for the Whitney Houston hit song "All at Once." He also sang on the famous fundraising song "We Are the World" in 1985.
Jeffrey also sang the theme song for the TV show Loving from 1992 to 1995. He also sang the theme song for the first season of the comedy show Veronica's Closet.
Jeffrey had two more gold albums: Don't Stop and Emotional. His song "You Should Be Mine" from the Emotional album was his highest-charting solo pop hit.
In 1987, he had his highest-charting hit ever. This was a duet with Dionne Warwick called "Love Power." It was a very popular song.
Later Music Career
In the 2000s, Jeffrey Osborne released more albums. While they weren't as big as his 1980s hits, they were still popular on Adult R&B radio. Songs like "Rest of Our Lives" and his cover of "Yes, I'm Ready" did well.
Jeffrey has also sung the national anthem at many big sports events. He sang it before several NBA Finals games at Staples Center in Los Angeles. He also sang it at the World Series baseball games in Oakland, California.
In 2010, Jeffrey appeared on The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love TV show. He sang his hit song "On the Wings of Love" for the show's finale.
