Jennie Harbour (born in 1893, died in 1959) was a talented English artist. She was known for her beautiful illustrations, especially in the Art Deco style. She brought many classic stories to life with her artwork.

About Jennie Harbour

Jennie Harbour was likely born in London around 1893. She became a well-known illustrator. Her work often appeared in books, postcards, and calendars.

Working with Raphael Tuck

By 1919, Jennie Harbour worked for Raphael Tuck & Sons. This company published many things, including postcards, calendars, and books. At first, she drew pictures of gardens and flowers for calendars. Her art was very popular.

People all over the world wanted her "delightfully distinctive, bright and pleasant" cards. Her prints were so successful that Raphael Tuck made a deal. They arranged for her work to be hand-printed in the United States.

Illustrating Fairy Tales

In 1921, Jennie Harbour illustrated My Favourite Book of Fairy Tales. This book had 12 color pictures and many black and white ones. She also illustrated My Book of Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes. She even drew pictures for Hans Christian Andersen's famous stories.

She created other beautiful illustrations too. These included Call of Spring and When Autumn Winds Do Blow. These were also for Raphael Tuck in 1921.

More Classic Stories

In 1927, she illustrated The Yellow Fairy Book. This book was part of the Newbery classics series. It was edited by Andrew Lang and published by David McKay Company.

A new version of the book came out in 1934. It had 48 stories. These included tales by Hans Christian Andersen. It also featured stories from Native American folklore. Plus, there were folk tales from France, Germany, Poland, and other countries.

The Green Fairy Book was published in 1934. It also included stories from many different countries. Some of the stories were "The Story of the Three Bears" and "The Fisherman and his Wife".

Later Life

Jennie Harbour passed away in the 1950s. Her beautiful illustrations continue to be enjoyed by many people.
