Her Journey in Math
Jennifer Quinn started her college journey at Williams College, where she earned her first degree in 1985. She then continued her studies, getting a master's degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1987.
She completed her highest degree, a doctorate (PhD), at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1993. Her main research was about how to color and arrange things in graphs, which are like diagrams used in math.
Teaching and Leadership
Before joining the University of Washington Tacoma, Jennifer Quinn taught at Occidental College. She was a full professor and even led the math department there until 2005.
She moved to Washington with her husband, Mark Martin, who is a biologist. For a while, she worked part-time and was the executive director for the Association for Women in Mathematics. In 2007, she became a full faculty member at the University of Washington Tacoma.
Awards and Achievements
Jennifer Quinn has received many awards for her excellent work in teaching and mathematics.
- In 2001, she won a special teaching award from the Mathematical Association of America.
- In 2007, she received the Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award. This award is given to college professors who are outstanding at teaching mathematics.
Her Book and Recognition
Jennifer Quinn also wrote a book with Arthur T. Benjamin called Proofs that Really Count: The Art of Combinatorial Proof. This book was published in 2003.
- It won the CHOICE Award for Outstanding Academic Title from the American Library Association.
- It also received the Beckenbach Book Prize from the Mathematical Association of America.
