Jenningstown (Atlanta) facts for kids
Jenningstown was a small community, almost like a village, that grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. It was built on and around a place called Diamond Hill.
This area was part of Atlanta's First Ward. After the American Civil War, around 1869, a very important school called Atlanta University was built right on top of Diamond Hill.
What Was Jenningstown Like?
Jenningstown was a "shantytown," which means it was a place where people built simple homes, often from whatever materials they could find. These homes were not always very strong or fancy.
Life After the Civil War
Soon after the Civil War, about 2,490 people lived in Jenningstown. Most of them were Black residents, but there were also some white missionaries living there. Missionaries are people who travel to help others, often sharing their religious beliefs.
The roads in Jenningstown were not well-made, and it was hard for people to get enough clean water.
Where Was Jenningstown?
People talked about Jenningstown even into the early 1900s. However, its exact borders were not very clear. Another area called Beaver Slide was located to the south of Jenningstown.
