Jennifer Mary Body is a brilliant British engineer who designs and builds things that fly, like airplanes. She is famous for being the first woman to become the President of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a very important group for people who work in aviation.

Early Life and Education

Jenny Body grew up in Bristol, England. Her father was also an engineer who worked with aircraft. This might have inspired her!

When she was in high school, Jenny was the only girl in her physics class. This shows she was very determined and loved science.

In 1971, she started training to be a mechanical engineer with a company called British Aerospace. She also studied at a famous university, Imperial College London.

Jenny Body's Career in Aerospace

Jenny Body worked for British Aerospace in their avionics group. Avionics is all about the electronic systems used in aircraft. She helped create the computer programs for "fly-by-wire" airplanes. These planes use computers to help pilots control them.

She also started a huge project called the Next Generation Composite Wing Programme. This was the biggest aerospace project in the UK at the time! Jenny was a leader in designing wings for planes, like the Nimrod. She also managed how wings were put together.

Leading the Royal Aeronautical Society

In 2013, Jenny Body made history. She became the first woman President of the Royal Aeronautical Society since it started in 1866! This was a huge achievement.

As President, she focused on helping women develop their technical skills. She also worked hard to inspire young people to think about careers in aerospace engineering.

In 2014, she helped create an agreement between her society and another group called the International Aviation Women Association. Their goal was to find and train more women to work in the aviation industry. Jenny still represents the society today, giving awards and interviews.

Awards and Recognition

Jenny Body has received many important awards for her work. She is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, which is a high honor. In 2010, she received an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to engineering.

She retired from Airbus in 2010, where she was the most senior female engineer. Jenny continues to work on important committees. She helps with diversity strategies for the Royal Academy of Engineering. She also chairs the Royal Aeronautical Society Education and Skills Committee.

In 2016, the University of the West of England gave her an honorary doctorate. This means they recognized her amazing achievements. In 2020, she received an even higher honor, becoming a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This was for her continued services to aerospace engineering.
