A Special Meeting and a Unique Design
This house came to be because of a lucky meeting! In late October 1909, Reverend Jesse R. Zeigler and Frank Lloyd Wright were both traveling in Europe. They started talking and hit it off. From that conversation, Wright agreed to design a house for Zeigler. The house was finished the very next year.
The "Fireproof House" Idea
The Zeigler House is a great example of one of Wright's special designs called "A Fireproof House for $5000". This was a plan Wright created to build strong, affordable homes that were also safe from fire. He wanted to make good design available to more people. These homes often had simple, open layouts and used materials like concrete and stucco.
A Historic Landmark
In 1976, the Reverend Jesse R. Zeigler House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important buildings, sites, and objects in the United States that are worth preserving. Being on this list means the house is recognized for its historical and architectural value. Today, the house is privately owned, which means it's a family home and not open for public tours.
