The Story Behind "Jesus Loves Me"
Anna Bartlett Warner wrote the poem "Jesus Loves Me" in 1859. It was first printed in a novel called Say and Seal in 1860. Her older sister, Susan Warner, wrote this book. In the story, the poem was spoken to a child who was dying. It offered comfort and hope.
The Original Poem
The poem by Anna Bartlett Warner had three parts, called stanzas. Here is how it first appeared:
Jesus loves me—this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to him belong,—
They are weak, but he is strong.
Jesus loves me—loves me still,
Though I'm very weak and ill;
From his shining throne on high,
Comes to watch me where I lie.
Jesus loves me—he will stay,
Close beside me all the way.
Then his little child will take,
Up to heaven for his dear sake.
Adding Music and a Chorus
In 1862, William Batchelder Bradbury added a tune to Anna Warner's poem. He was a music composer. Bradbury also wrote a new part, called a chorus. This chorus repeats the words "Yes, Jesus loves me!" three times. This made the song even more catchy and easy to remember.
Here is the hymn with Bradbury's music and chorus:
Jesus loves me, this I know,
for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong;
they are weak, but he is strong.
Refrain
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me he who died
heaven's gate to open wide.
He will wash away my sin,
let his little child come in.
Refrain
Jesus loves me, this I know,
as he loved so long ago,
taking children on his knee,
saying, "Let them come to me."
