James Edward Abbott (August 18, 1942 – July 26, 2020) was an important Canadian politician. He was a member of the House of Commons of Canada, which is where laws are made for the country. Mr. Abbott was part of the Conservative Party of Canada.
Before joining the Conservatives, he was a member of the Reform Party of Canada from 1993 to 2000. He then joined the Canadian Alliance from 2000 to 2004. He represented the people living in an area called Kootenay—Columbia. Before 1997, this area was known as Kootenay East.
Towards the end of his time in politics, Mr. Abbott served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for International Cooperation (Canada). This role meant he helped the minister in charge of Canada's work with other countries. On October 15, 2007, he received a special honour when he was sworn into the Queen's Privy Council for Canada. This meant he could use the title "The Honourable" for the rest of his life.
In 2010, James Abbott travelled to the Philippines. He attended the inauguration of President Benigno Aquino III as Canada's representative. James Abbott passed away in Cranbrook, British Columbia, on July 26, 2020, at 77 years old.
