Who Was Jim Jeffries?

Jim Jeffries was a talented baseball player from the early 1900s. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 18, 1893. He became famous for his skills in the Negro leagues. These leagues were professional baseball leagues in the United States. They were made up mostly of African-American players. This was because of racial segregation at the time.

Playing Baseball

Jim Jeffries played baseball for many years. He was a versatile player. This means he could play different positions well. His main roles were as a pitcher and an outfielder. A pitcher throws the ball to the batter. An outfielder catches balls hit into the far parts of the field.

Pitching and Outfield

As a pitcher, Jim Jeffries was a "southpaw." This is a nickname for a left-handed pitcher. Left-handed pitchers can be tricky for batters to face. As an outfielder, he would help catch fly balls. He would also throw them back to the infield. Both roles need a lot of skill and quick thinking.

His Teams

Jim Jeffries played for several teams during his career. He played for the Indianapolis ABCs from 1915 to 1923. He also played for the Royal Poinciana Team in 1916. Later, he joined the Harrisburg Giants in 1924. He also played for the Baltimore Black Sox from 1924 to 1925. His last main team was the Birmingham Black Barons. He played for them from 1926 to 1928 and again in 1931.
