Jimena María Francisca Emilia Fernández de la Vega y Lombán (1895–1984) was a very important Spanish doctor, geneticist, and teacher. She was born in Vegadeo and passed away in Santiago de Compostela. In 2021, the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences honored her as the "Scientist of the Year."

Her Early Life and Studies

Jimena's father, Wenceslao Fernández de la Vega Pasarín, was also a doctor. He was the first director of a special health spa in Guitiriz, Lugo. Jimena and her sister, Elisa Fernández de la Vega, both decided to study medicine at university.

They both went to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela. They worked very hard and graduated together. Both sisters were excellent students.

University Achievements

Jimena and Elisa both received the Civil Order of Alfonso XII. This was a very high honor given for their amazing university results. Jimena even won a special "Extraordinary Prize" contest for her studies.

After graduating, Jimena continued to learn and grow. She traveled to many different countries to study with famous professors. She learned in places like Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Some of her teachers included F. Kraus, T. Brugsh, E. Baur, and N. Pende.

Becoming a Geneticist

Jimena was especially interested in genetics, which is the study of how traits are passed down from parents to children. She learned from well-known experts like Nóvoa Santos, Gregorio Marañón, and Gustavo Pittaluga.

Later in her career, Jimena became a professor. She taught in the General Pathology department at the Central University of Madrid. Her work helped many students learn about medicine and genetics.
