Jimmie Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois. When he was a teenager, he moved to Meridian, Mississippi.
Career
Working in Meridian
After moving to Meridian, Jimmie Smith first worked in local hospitals. Later, he joined the Meridian Police Department. He worked in different parts of the police force, including the SWAT Team.
Serving the County
Smith served for 20 years on the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors. This group helps manage the county's government and services.
Mayor of Meridian
First Try for Mayor
In 2005, while still on the Board of Supervisors, Smith ran for mayor. He was the candidate for the Democratic Party. He lost the election to the mayor at the time, John Robert Smith, by a very small number of votes.
Becoming Mayor
Sixteen years later, in 2021, Jimmie Smith ran for mayor again. He first competed against the current mayor, Percy Bland, in the Democratic primary election. A primary election helps a party choose its best candidate. After winning a second vote, called a run-off, in April 2021, Smith moved on to the main election.
In the general election, he ran against Weston Lindemann, an independent candidate, and Robert Ray, a Republican. In June 2021, Jimmie Smith won the election. He received more than 60 percent of all the votes. This made him the new mayor of Meridian.
