First Try for Mayor
In 2005, while still on the Board of Supervisors, Jimmie Smith ran for mayor. He was the candidate for the Democratic Party. He lost the election to the mayor at the time, John Robert Smith, by a very small number of votes.
Winning the Mayor's Race
Sixteen years later, in 2021, Jimmie Smith ran for mayor again. He first competed against Mayor Percy Bland in the Democratic primary election. After winning that race, he then ran against Weston Lindemann and Robert Ray. In June 2021, Jimmie Smith won the election. He received more than 60 percent of the votes. He became the mayor of Meridian on July 1, 2021.
Running for a Second Term
In April 2025, Jimmie Smith ran for a second term as mayor. He again faced Percy Bland in the Democratic primary election. This time, Percy Bland won the primary election. Jimmie Smith's term as mayor ended on June 30, 2025.
