James Francis Ferguson (born February 26, 1940 – died October 8, 1997) was an important founding member of the popular Irish-Canadian folk band, The Irish Rovers. He was unique because he was the only member who didn't play an instrument. Instead, he used his deep, rich voice to sing. Jimmy was also known as the funny person in the group, making everyone laugh.

The Start of The Irish Rovers

Jimmy Ferguson was born in Belfast, which is in Northern Ireland. When he was a young man, he moved to Canada. In 1963, he met George Millar at an Irish event in Toronto.

Forming the Band

Jimmy and George decided to start a folk music duo. Soon after, George's cousin, Joe Millar, joined them. Two other musicians from Toronto, Vic Marcus and Doug Henderson, also became part of the group. They chose the name The Irish Rovers.

In 1979, Jimmy explained how the band grew. He said they first formed in Toronto. Jimmy sang, George played guitar, and Joe played the accordion. They played in many clubs in Toronto.

Moving to Calgary

The group wanted to do more. So, Jimmy, George, and Joe decided to visit Will Millar in Calgary. They ended up staying there. This is when The Irish Rovers officially became a group of four main members. Joe Millar and his family also moved from Toronto to Calgary.

Jimmy's Music and Voice

Jimmy Ferguson's powerful voice can be heard on many famous songs by The Irish Rovers. One of these is "The Orange and the Green". Another big hit where his voice stands out is "Wasn't That a Party," which came out in 1981. His singing was a key part of the band's sound.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1992, while on tour in New Zealand, Jimmy Ferguson had some health problems. He continued to have heart issues for the rest of his life. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 57. He was on tour in Worcester, Massachusetts at the time. Jimmy Ferguson is remembered for his unique voice and his humor with The Irish Rovers.

Family Life

Jimmy Ferguson married Jan Adams in 1968. They had a daughter named Erin in 1970.
