The Musical Journey of Jimmy Hughes
Jimmy J. Hughes was a talented American singer. He was known for his soulful rhythm and blues music. His songs helped shape the sound of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a famous place for music.
Early Life and Gospel Roots
Jimmy Hughes was born on February 3, 1938, in Leighton, Alabama. He was a cousin to another famous singer, Percy Sledge. From a young age, Jimmy loved to sing. While in high school, he joined a gospel music group called The Singing Clouds. Gospel music is a type of religious music.
Starting His Professional Career
In 1962, Jimmy decided to try out for a record producer named Rick Hall. This audition took place at his FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals. Rick Hall was very impressed by Jimmy's voice. They recorded a song called "I'm Qualified." This song was released by a record company, but it didn't become a big hit. Jimmy went back to his job at a factory. He also started singing R&B songs in local clubs. R&B stands for Rhythm and Blues, a popular style of music.
The Breakthrough Hit: "Steal Away"
In early 1964, Jimmy returned to Rick Hall with a powerful new song. He had written it himself, and it was called "Steal Away." This song was partly inspired by an old gospel tune. Jimmy recorded "Steal Away" in just one take! He was backed by a talented group of studio musicians. These musicians included Terry Thompson on guitar, David Briggs on keyboards, Norbert Putnam on bass, and Jerry Carrigan on drums.
Rick Hall and his friend Dan Penn worked hard to get "Steal Away" played on radio stations. Their efforts paid off! The song became a huge success, reaching number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Many people say "Steal Away" helped create the unique "Muscle Shoals sound." Because of this hit, Rick Hall's FAME label got a big deal with Vee-Jay Records. Jimmy's next song, "Try Me," also did well, reaching number 65. He then released an album called Steal Away. During this time, Jimmy toured with other music stars like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson.
Later Success and New Record Labels
After a few more songs, Vee-Jay Records focused on other popular bands. However, in 1966, things changed again for Jimmy. After his cousin Percy Sledge had a big hit, Rick Hall made a new deal with Atlantic Records. Jimmy Hughes returned to the music charts! His songs "Neighbor, Neighbor" and "Why Not Tonight" became popular R&B hits. He then moved to the Atlantic label itself, releasing "It Ain't What You Got" in 1968.
Early in 1968, Jimmy joined another famous record company, Stax Records. His songs were released on their Volt label. His first song for Volt, "I Like Everything About You," was a hit on the R&B chart. He also released an album called Something Special in 1969.
A Change of Pace: Life After Music
Jimmy Hughes eventually decided to stop recording and performing music in 1970. He felt that his records weren't being promoted enough. He also missed his family and grew tired of traveling for tours. Jimmy chose a new career path. He trained for a government job. He worked making parts for nuclear power plants in the Tennessee River Valley. In his later years, he only sang as part of his church choir in Leighton.
Jimmy Hughes passed away in Leighton, Alabama, on May 20, 2026, at the age of 88. His music continues to be remembered and enjoyed. Several collections of his songs have been released over the years.
