Early Life and Learning
Jimmy Santiago Baca was born in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, in 1952. When he was very young, he faced difficulties and spent time living with his grandmother and later in an orphanage. At 13, he left the orphanage and lived on his own.
When he was 21, Jimmy faced more challenges and spent five years in a correctional facility. During this time, he taught himself to read and write. He discovered a love for poetry and began writing his own poems. He would share his poems with others, who appreciated his work.
One day, a person he met encouraged him to send his poems to a magazine called Mother Jones. The editor, Denise Levertov, liked his poems very much. She published some of his work and started writing letters to him. She even helped him find a publisher for his very first book of poems.
