It marked the end of the Unified Silla period and the start of the Later Three Kingdoms period.

Queen Jinseong had a royal family. She was the daughter of King Gyeongmun and Queen Munui. She had two older brothers, Heongang and Jeonggang. Both of her brothers ruled before her. However, they both died without having children. This meant that Jinseong became the next ruler.

- Grandmother: Madam Gwanghwa
- Father: King Gyeongmun (841–875)
- Mother: Queen Munui of the Kim clan

How Did Queen Jinseong Become Queen?
Jinseong became queen because her two older brothers, King Heongang and King Jeonggang, passed away. Neither of them had children to take the throne. People hoped Jinseong would be a great ruler, just like the successful queens before her, Seondeok and Jindeok.
What Was Queen Jinseong's Reign Like?
Queen Jinseong's time as ruler was very challenging for Silla. During her reign, the country faced many problems. It became hard for the government to collect taxes. The system for joining the military also stopped working well.
Some historical records, like the Samguk Sagi, mention difficulties during her rule. However, other records, like those from Choe Chiwon, describe her as a kind-hearted ruler.
Because of the problems in the country, different leaders started to rebel. Yang Gil in the northwest and Gyeon Hwon in the southwest began their own kingdoms. This led to the end of the Unified Silla period. It also started a new time called the Later Three Kingdoms period.
In 895, Queen Jinseong chose Kim Yo to be the Crown Prince. He was the son of her brother, Heongang. On July 4, 897, Queen Jinseong decided to step down from the throne. She passed away later that year, on December 31, 897. She was buried north of the Sajasa temple in Gyeongju.
What Is Queen Jinseong's Legacy?
Queen Jinseong ordered the first collection of hyangga works. Hyangga were traditional Korean poems or songs. This collection was called Samdaemok. This shows her interest in preserving culture and art.
