About João Amoêdo's Life
João Amoêdo was born on October 22, 1962. His father was Armando Rocha Amoêdo, a radiologist. His mother was Maria Elisa Filgueira Barreto, a business owner. In 1987, João Amoêdo married Rosa Helena Nasser. They have three daughters together.
João Amoêdo has always enjoyed sports. He has finished six Ironman Triathlons. He has also run more than 10 marathons. In 2010, he recovered from a health issue. After that, he went back to his normal routine, including sports. He continues to be active today.
Starting the New Party (NOVO)
In 2009, João Amoêdo was talking with friends. He felt frustrated about the high taxes people paid. He also felt that public services were not very good. He started to think about how private businesses could help improve public services. He believed in good management, rewarding hard work, and being open about how things are done.
He talked with many politicians. He realized that new leaders were needed in public life. He thought the best way to make a change was to create a new political party. This party would be different from the ones that already existed. The goal was to let people who cared about Brazil join politics. These were people who had never been involved before. João Amoêdo believed that current politicians were not doing a good job. He felt that people needed to get involved for real change to happen.
On February 12, 2011, João Amoêdo and 181 other citizens started the NOVO. These people came from 35 different jobs and 10 different states. On September 15, 2015, NOVO was officially recognized as a party. João Amoêdo became its first president. He stepped down from this role in July 2017.
In November 2022, he left the New Party (NOVO). He said that the party he helped create "no longer exists." He felt the party was not following its own rules. He also believed it was trying to silence members. The party responded by saying they were sad about his comments. They felt he had moved away from the party's main ideas.
João Amoêdo's Political Ideas
João Amoêdo supports individual freedoms. He believes that a free market works best for everyone. He thinks that individuals are the main creators of wealth. He sees them as the ones who bring about change. As a founder of the New Party, Amoêdo says that all party members will follow liberal ideas. This means they want a smaller government. They also want individuals to have more freedom. And they want lower taxes for everyone.
He has also talked about social programs. For example, he mentioned the Bolsa Família program. He wrote in a newspaper that this program gives "one of the best returns" for the money spent. However, he also said it does not show a "clear way out" for people to become independent.
