João Dionisio Filgueira Barreto Amoêdo (born 22 October 1962), known as João Amoêdo, is a Brazilian banker, engineer, and businessman. He is one of the people who started the New Party (NOVO). He was the party's president from September 2015 to July 2017. He also ran as their candidate in the 2018 Brazilian presidential election.

About João Amoêdo's Life

João Amoêdo is the son of Armando Rocha Amoêdo, a radiologist, and Maria Elisa Filgueira Barreto, a business owner. In 1987, he married Rosa Helena Nasser. They have three daughters together. João Amoêdo has always enjoyed sports. He has finished six Ironman Triathlons and more than 10 marathons. In 2010, after getting better from a health issue, he went back to his normal routine. This included his sports activities. He continues to be active today.

Starting the New Party

In 2009, João Amoêdo was talking with friends. He felt frustrated about the high amount of taxes people paid. He also felt that the public services provided by the government were not good enough. He started thinking about how private businesses could help improve public services. He wondered if they could bring good management, fairness, and openness.

After talking with politicians, he realized something important. He believed the best way to make people's lives better was to bring new leaders into public life. He thought a new political party was needed. This party would be different from the ones that already existed. The goal was to create a way for people who had never been in politics to get involved. These were people who truly wanted to make a positive change. João Amoêdo believed that current politicians were not doing a good job. He felt that people needed to get involved for real change to happen.

On 12 February 2011, João Amoêdo, along with 181 other citizens, founded the NOVO. These citizens came from 35 different jobs and 10 different states in Brazil. On 15 September 2015, NOVO was officially approved as a party. João Amoêdo became its president. He stepped down from this role in July 2017.

In November 2022, he left the New Party (NOVO). He said that the party he helped create "no longer exists." He also stated that the party was not following its own rules. He claimed it was trying to silence members and encouraging actions that were not democratic. This decision came after he supported Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the second round of the 2022 Brazilian general election. The New Party responded by saying they were sad about his statements. They said he had moved away from the party's main ideas.

João Amoêdo's Political Ideas

João Amoêdo supports individual freedoms. He believes that a free market is the best way for businesses to work for everyone. He thinks that individuals are the main creators of wealth. He also sees individuals as agents of change. As a founder of the New Party, Amoêdo states that all elected members of the party will follow a "liberal ideal." This means they want less government involvement. They also want more freedom for individuals and lower taxes.

Regarding the Bolsa Família program, João Amoêdo wrote in a newspaper that it "brings one of the best returns" for the money invested. However, he also said it does not show a "clear way out" for people. This means he thought it was a good program for helping people, but perhaps it didn't help them become fully independent.
