João Paulo played for many different football clubs during his career. He started playing professionally in Brazil before moving to Italy.
Playing for Bari in Italy
In 1989, João Paulo joined an Italian club called Bari. He quickly became a key player for the team. He worked well with other strikers like Pietro Maiellaro and Florin Raducioiu.
During the 1989–90 season, he scored six goals in 33 games in Serie A, Italy's top league. The next season, 1990–1991, was even better for him. He scored 12 goals. One of his most memorable moments was scoring two goals against A.C. Milan. These goals helped another team, Sampdoria, win their first ever Serie A title.
A Difficult Injury
João Paulo started the 1991–92 season in great form. However, in a match against Sampdoria, he suffered a serious injury. A tackle from a defender named Marco Lanna broke his leg. This injury was very serious and ended his season.
It took João Paulo a whole year to recover from his leg injury. Even after Bari was moved down to a lower league, Serie B, he stayed with the club for two more seasons until 1994.
Returning to Brazil and Japan
After his time in Italy, João Paulo returned to play for several clubs in Brazil. He played for teams like Vasco da Gama, Goiás, and Corinthians.
Later in his career, in 2000, he also played for a Japanese club called Mito HollyHock. He continued to play football in Brazil until 2004.
