Mito HollyHock (水戸ホーリーホック, Mito Hōrīhokku) is a professional football (soccer) club from Japan. The team is based in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. They currently play in the J2 League, which is the second-highest professional football league in Japan.

What's in the Name?

The team's nickname, "HollyHock," comes from a special symbol. It's from the family crest of the Tokugawa clan. This powerful family used to rule from Mito during the Edo period in Japan.

Club History

The club started in 1990 as Prima Aseno FC. It was created by workers from a food company called Prima Ham in Tsuchiura. Later, the team changed its name to Prima Ham FC Tsuchiura. They moved up to the Japan Football League in 1996.

In 1997, Prima Ham stopped supporting the club. So, the team joined with another club called FC Mito, which started in 1994. Together, they became Mito HollyHock.

At first, Mito HollyHock couldn't join the J. League Division 2 in 1999. This was because they didn't have enough money and not many fans came to their games. But they worked hard! In 1999, they finished 3rd in the Japan Football League. More and more fans started coming to watch them play. Because of this, the club was invited to join the J. League in 2000.

Mito HollyHock isn't just about football! They also have teams in e-sports (video game competitions). They even have an Ice Hockey team that plays in the Ibaraki Prefectural League.

Mito HollyHock has played in the J2 League for many years. This is the second division of Japanese professional football. They have also competed in the J. League Cup and the Emperor's Cup. These are important cup competitions in Japan.
