Takashi Kiyama (木山 隆之, Kiyama Takashi, born February 18, 1972) is a Japanese professional football manager and former player. He is currently the manager of the J1 League club Fagiano Okayama.
Playing as a Footballer
Takashi Kiyama was born in Itami, Japan, on February 18, 1972. After finishing his studies at University of Tsukuba, he began his professional football journey. In 1994, he joined Gamba Osaka, a well-known club.
Time at Gamba Osaka
Kiyama quickly became an important player for Gamba Osaka. He played many games as a center back right from his first season. However, he faced some challenges. From 1995 onwards, injuries made it harder for him to play as often.
Moving to New Clubs
In 1998, Kiyama moved to Consadole Sapporo, where he played for one season. In May 1999, he joined Mito HollyHock, a club in the Japan Football League. Here, he became a regular player again, playing as a strong center back.
Mito HollyHock was promoted to the J2 League in 2000. Kiyama continued to be a key defender for the team until 2002. He decided to retire from playing professional football at the end of the 2002 season.
Becoming a Football Manager
After his playing career, Takashi Kiyama decided to become a coach. He first coached for University of Tsukuba and then worked with the youth team of Vissel Kobe. These experiences helped him prepare for bigger roles.
First Manager Job at Mito HollyHock
In 2008, Kiyama took on his first main coaching job. He became the manager for his old club, Mito HollyHock. He made history as the youngest person to manage a J2 League club. He was only 36 years and 19 days old! He was also the first J2 League coach to be sent off in his very first match. Kiyama is also known for making a healthy choice to stop smoking, and he openly shared this decision.
Managing JEF United Chiba
In 2012, Kiyama became the manager for JEF United Chiba, another J2 League team. His goal was to help the team get promoted to the J1 League. Although JEF United Chiba did not get promoted that year, Kiyama continued to lead them until their game against Kashima Antlers in the 2012 Emperor's Cup quarterfinals.
Returning to Vissel Kobe
In 2013, Kiyama went back to Vissel Kobe, but this time as an assistant coach. He helped the team from behind the scenes.
Leading Ehime FC
