Montedio Yamagata (モンテディオ山形, Montedio Yamagata) is a Japanese professional association football club. It is based in Tendo, Yamagata. The club currently plays in the J2 League, which is Japan's second-highest professional football league.

What Does the Name "Montedio" Mean?

The name "Montedio" is a special word. It combines two Italian words:

  • "Monte" means "mountain."
  • "Dio" means "God."

So, "Montedio" means "Mountain God." This name likely connects to the beautiful mountains in the Yamagata region.

The Story of Montedio Yamagata

Montedio Yamagata started in 1984 as the NEC Yamagata Soccer Club. It was based in Tsuruoka. The team worked hard and moved up to the Japan Football League (former) in 1994.

In 1996, the club changed its name to Montedio Yamagata. Since 1999, they have been playing in the J. League Division 2. This is a major professional league in Japan.

On November 30, 2008, Montedio Yamagata made history! They were promoted to the J. League Division 1 for the very first time. This is the top football league in Japan. Their best finish in the J1 League was 13th place in 2010.

However, in 2011, the team faced challenges. They were relegated back to the J2 League. After three seasons in the J2, Montedio Yamagata returned to the J1 League in 2014. They won the J1/J2 promotion playoff final. But their time in J1 was short, and they returned to J2 for the 2016 season. The club has been playing in the J2 League since then. As of 2023, it is their eighth season in a row in the J2.

Team Rivalries

Ōu Honsen (Dewa Derby)

Montedio Yamagata has a special rivalry with TDK. This rivalry started way back in 1990. Both clubs are from the old Dewa Province in Japan. Their matches are now called the Ōu Honsen (奥羽本戦). This name comes from the Japan Railways Ōu Main Line (奥羽本線), which is a railway line connecting the regions where both teams are located.
