Ryosuke Okuno (奥野 僚右, Okuno Ryōsuke, born 13 November 1968) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He was known for his strong defense and leadership on the field. After a successful career as a player, he moved into coaching and managing football teams.

Playing Career: A Defender's Journey

Ryosuke Okuno was born in Kyoto, Japan, on November 13, 1968. After finishing his studies at Waseda University, he joined a professional football team called Kashima Antlers in 1993.

Success with Kashima Antlers

At Kashima Antlers, Okuno became a key player. He played as a center back alongside another great defender, Yutaka Akita. Together, they helped the team start a "golden era," winning many championships.

During his time with Kashima Antlers, the team won the J1 League championship twice, in 1996 and 1998. They also won the J.League Cup in 1997 and the Emperor's Cup in 1997.

Moving to New Teams

In 2000, Okuno moved to Kawasaki Frontale, a team that had just been promoted to the top league, J1 League. He continued to play as a center back. Even though the team finished last in the league that year, they did well in the J.League Cup, finishing in second place.

In 2001, he joined Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Then, in 2002, he moved to Thespa Kusatsu. At Thespa Kusatsu, he took on a special role: he was a player and a manager at the same time! This is called a "playing manager."

Retirement from Playing

Okuno helped Thespa Kusatsu get promoted to higher leagues. They moved up to the Regional Leagues in 2003 and then to the Japan Football League in 2004. He stopped playing football at the end of the 2003 season.

Coaching Career: Leading Teams to Victory

After retiring as a player, Ryosuke Okuno continued his career in football as a coach and manager.

Early Coaching Roles

He started his coaching journey as a playing manager for Thespa Kusatsu in 2002. He helped the team climb up the ranks in Japanese football. Even though he left the club as a player at the end of 2003, he had already made a big impact.

In 2004, Okuno returned to his former club, Kashima Antlers, but this time as a coach. He was part of the coaching staff when the team won the J1 League championship three years in a row, from 2007 to 2009.

Becoming a Manager

In 2012, Ryosuke Okuno became the manager of Montedio Yamagata, a team in the J2 League. He managed the team for two years, until 2013. Later, from 2020 to 2021, he returned to manage Thespakusatsu Gunma again.
