Shigeharu Ueki (植木 繁晴, Ueki Shigeharu, September 13, 1954 – April 11, 2024) was a Japanese football (soccer) player and manager. He played as a forward. Ueki also played one game for the Japan national team. Later, he became a successful coach for several Japanese clubs.

Playing Career: Club Success

Shigeharu Ueki was born in Kawasaki, Japan, on September 13, 1954. After finishing his studies at Nihon University, he joined a football club called Fujita Industries in 1977.

He had a very successful time with Fujita Industries. The team won the Japan Soccer League championship three times: in 1977, 1979, and 1981. They also won the Emperor's Cup, a major football tournament, in 1977 and 1979.

Ueki played for Fujita Industries until 1988, when he decided to retire as a player. During his career, he played 144 league games and scored 16 goals.

Playing Career: National Team

Shigeharu Ueki also had the chance to play for his country. On July 13, 1979, he made his first and only appearance for the Japan national team. This game was against the Singapore team, and Japan won the match.

Coaching Career

After he stopped playing, Ueki started a new journey as a football coach. He began his coaching career at his former club, Fujita Industries, which later changed its name to Bellmare Hiratsuka.

In November 1995, he became the main manager for Bellmare Hiratsuka. He led the team in the 1995 Emperor's Cup and the 1995 Asian Cup Winners' Cup. Under his guidance, the club won the Asian Cup Winners' Cup, which was a big achievement!

Ueki managed Bellmare Hiratsuka again from September 1996 until 1998. In 1999, he moved to another club, Montedio Yamagata, which played in the J2 League. He managed them until 2000.

Later, in 2002, he joined Japan Football League club Thespa Kusatsu. He managed them for one season in 2004 and helped the team get promoted to the J2 League. He returned to manage Thespa Kusatsu again from 2006 to 2008.

Later Life and Death

Shigeharu Ueki passed away on April 11, 2024, at the age of 69. He is remembered as an important figure in Japanese football, both as a player and a manager.
