Playing career
Kiyotaka Ishimaru was born in Katano, Japan, on October 30, 1973. After finishing his studies at Hannan University, he joined Avispa Fukuoka in 1996. This team had just been promoted to the top Japanese football league, the J1 League.
Ishimaru quickly became a regular player for Avispa Fukuoka. He played many games for them until the year 2000. In 2001, he moved to Kyoto Purple Sanga, a team in the J2 League, which is the second division.
At Kyoto Purple Sanga, he continued to be a key player. His team won the J2 League championship in 2001 and was promoted to the J1 League in 2002. In the same year, 2002, the club achieved a big victory by winning the Emperor's Cup. This was the first major trophy in the club's history!
In 2003, Ishimaru became the team captain. However, the club finished last in the J1 League and was moved back down to J2 in 2004. In 2005, he didn't play any matches for Kyoto Purple Sanga. Later that year, in October, he joined Ehime FC, a team in the Japan Football League.
Ehime FC won their league championship in 2005 and was promoted to the J2 League in 2006. Ishimaru played many games for them, often coming on as a substitute. He retired from playing football at the end of the 2006 season.
Coaching career
After he stopped playing, Kiyotaka Ishimaru began his coaching journey at Ehime FC in 2007. He first worked as a coach for the main team from 2007 to 2009. Then, he managed the youth team from 2010 to 2012, helping young players develop their skills.
In 2013, Ishimaru became the manager for Ehime FC's main team. He led them until 2014. In 2015, he moved to Kyoto Sanga FC to work as a coach. In July 2015, the previous manager, Masahiro Wada, left, and Ishimaru took over as the new manager.
In 2016, under his leadership, Kyoto Sanga FC finished in 5th place. This was a good result, but they just missed out on being promoted back to the J1 League. He left the club at the end of that season.
On December 14, 2019, it was announced that Ishimaru would become the manager of Montedio Yamagata, another J2 League club, for the 2020 season. However, in April 2021, he was dismissed. This happened after only nine games because the team was not performing well. They were in 20th place with only one win, four losses, and four draws.
On December 17, 2021, Ishimaru returned to Ehime FC for the 2022 season. This was his second time managing the club. On November 11, 2023, Ishimaru led Ehime FC to become champions of the J3 League. This victory meant the team would return to the second division for the 2024 season, after being away for two years.
