History of FC Gifu
How the Club Started
Before FC Gifu, the city of Gifu had a team called Seino Transportation Co. This team played in older Japanese football leagues. However, it was relegated in 1997 and then closed down.
The FC Gifu club we know today was started in 2001. Some people who helped create it had been involved with the old Seino team. A former Seino player, Takashi Umeda, even came back to Gifu to join the new club.
Climbing the Leagues
FC Gifu worked hard to move up in the football world. In 2007, they were promoted to the new Japan Football League. They did very well that year, finishing in third place. This high finish meant they could move up again!
On December 3, 2007, the J. League (Japan's top professional football league system) approved FC Gifu's promotion. This meant they would join J. League Division 2 for the 2008 season. This was a big step for the club, as they became a professional team.
Recent Seasons
For many years, FC Gifu played in J. League Division 2. They often finished in the lower half of the league table. In 2012, they just barely avoided being relegated back to the Japan Football League.
Between 2013 and 2018, the team continued to play in J. League Division 2. They managed to stay in the league, even though they were often near the bottom. However, in 2019, they finished last in the league. This result led to them being relegated to the J3 League, where they play today.
Team Crest
The crest, or logo, of FC Gifu tells a story about Gifu Prefecture.
- The top part of the crest shows the mountain ranges in the northern part of Gifu.
- The flowers on the crest are called Chinese milk vetch. This is the official flower of Gifu Prefecture.
- The three lines below the flowers represent the Kiso Three Rivers. These important rivers flow through the prefecture.
- The banner at the very bottom of the crest is special. It's the same symbol that was on the helmet of the victorious Tokugawa clan during a famous battle in 1600 called the Battle of Sekigahara.
