FC Gifu is a professional football (soccer) club from Gifu, the capital city of Gifu Prefecture, Japan. They are known as FC Gifu for short. The team plays in the J3 League, which is the third level of professional football in Japan.
Club History
How FC Gifu Started
Before FC Gifu, there was another team in Gifu called Seino Transportation Co. This team played in older Japanese football leagues. They stopped playing in 1998.
The modern FC Gifu club was started in 2001. Some of the people who helped create the new club had been involved with the old Seino team. One former player, Takashi Umeda, even came back to join FC Gifu after playing for another team for ten years.
Climbing the Leagues
FC Gifu worked hard to move up through the different football leagues. In 2007, they were promoted to the new Japan Football League. This was a big step for the club.
They did very well in 2007, finishing in third place. This high finish meant they could move up again, this time to J.League Division 2. The J.League officially approved their promotion in December 2007, and they started playing in J2 in 2008.
Recent Seasons
For many years, FC Gifu played in the J2 League. They often finished in the lower half of the league table. In 2012, they almost got sent down to a lower league, but they managed to stay in J2.
In 2019, after many seasons in J2, FC Gifu finished last in the league. This meant they were relegated to the J3 League. They have been playing in the J3 League ever since.
