Shinji Kobayashi, born on August 24, 1960, is a well-known Japanese football manager and a former player. He is currently the manager of the Tochigi SC football club. He has a long history in Japanese football, both playing the game and leading teams as a coach.
Playing Career
Shinji Kobayashi was born in Unzen, Japan. He started his football journey as a player. After finishing college at Osaka University of Commerce, he joined a team called Mazda in 1983. He played as a forward, which is a player whose main job is to score goals. He continued playing for Mazda until 1992.
Coaching Career
After he stopped playing, Shinji Kobayashi began a new career as a football coach. He started at his old club, Mazda (which later became Sanfrecce Hiroshima). He worked as a coach for the main team and also managed the youth teams until 1999.
In 2000, he moved to Avispa Fukuoka. Then, in 2001, he joined Oita Trinita. By June 2001, he became the main manager for Oita Trinita. In 2002, he led the club to win the J2 League championship. This win helped the club move up to the top league, the J1 League. He managed Oita Trinita until 2003.
In July 2004, he signed with Cerezo Osaka and managed them until April 2006. After that, he managed several other J2 League clubs. These included Montedio Yamagata (from 2008 to 2011), Tokushima Vortis (from 2012 to 2015), and Shimizu S-Pulse (from 2016 to 2017). A remarkable fact about his career is that he helped all four of these J2 League clubs get promoted to the J1 League.
In 2019, he signed with J3 League club Giravanz Kitakyushu. He continued to manage them until 2021 and returned for a period in 2023. Since 2024, he has been the manager of Tochigi SC.
