Joanna Ellis-Monaghan grew up in Alaska, a very big state in the United States. She went to Bennington College and graduated in 1984. There, she studied two main subjects: mathematics and studio art.
After that, she continued her studies and earned a master's degree in mathematics in 1986 from the University of Vermont. She then started working towards her Ph.D., which is a very high-level university degree. She began at Dartmouth College and later moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She finished her Ph.D. in 1995.
Her Ph.D. research was a big paper called a "dissertation." It was about a special kind of math called "graph polynomials" and their properties.
