Joachim Nielsen (born September 8, 1964 – died October 17, 2000) was a famous Norwegian rock musician and poet. Many people knew him as Jokke. He was the main singer and leader of the Norwegian rock band Jokke & Valentinerne. Joachim was also the brother of cartoonist Christopher Nielsen and the son of artist John David Nielsen. Many people think he was one of Norway's best songwriters ever.

Joachim Nielsen passed away suddenly in October 2000 when he was 36 years old.

In 2005, a special album was released to honor him. It was called Det beste til meg og mine venner, which means The best for me and my friends. This album had many Norwegian artists singing their own versions of Jokke's most famous songs. Later that year, three songs that had never been released before came out on a single called Tomgang.

A Street Named After Him

In November 2005, people in the "old town" of Oslo suggested naming a street after Joachim Nielsen. They wanted to honor him in the new part of Oslo called Bjørvika.

However, this idea was not approved at first. Instead, a committee decided he could have a street named after him in Grønland, Oslo. This street is now called "Joachim Nielsens gang", which means "Joachim Nielsen's aisle". The street sign was put up in September 2006. A bar and a theater are very close to this street. People also suggested building a statue of him, but his family did not want that.

Jokke & Valentinerne (which means Jokke and the Valentines) was a rock band formed in 1982. Joachim Nielsen played guitar and sang. May-Irene Aasen, who was his longtime partner, played the drums. Håkon Torgersen played the bass guitar.

The band became very popular in Oslo's underground rock music scene. Their first album, Alt kan repareres (Everything can be repaired), came out in 1986. Jokke & Valentinerne is seen as one of the "Great Four" Norwegian-language rock bands from the 1980s. The other three bands were deLillos, Dum Dum Boys, and Raga Rockers. The band's music was inspired by punk rock and American Southern rock.

Joachim Nielsen's songs often showed understanding for people who had faced tough times in life. His lyrics also talked about the lives of everyday working people. Other Norwegian artists like the poet Rudolf Nilsen and musician Alf Prøysen also influenced his music and writing style.

JEPS

JEPS is a short way of saying "Jokke's Eget PlateSelskap". This means "Jokke's Own Record Company". Joachim Nielsen used this abbreviation on some of the CDs he released.
