Meet Joan Colom, the Photographer
Joan Colom was born in the city of Barcelona. He learned photography all by himself, without going to a special school. During the week, he worked as an accountant. But in his free time, he took many of the amazing pictures he is known for today.
How He Started in Photography
In 1957, Joan Colom joined a photography group called the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya (AFC). This was a big step for him. Then, in 1960, he helped start a new art group called El Mussol. This name means "The Owl" in English.
Capturing Life on the Streets
Joan Colom's unique style of photography became very popular. In 1962, his work was shown in Paris. He was presented alongside other photographers like Xavier Misserachs and Oriol Maspons. They were part of a new art movement called the "New Avantgarde." These photographers were inspired by famous artists such as Brassaï, Francesc Català Roca, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Man Ray. Colom's photos often showed people living their daily lives in the city, capturing honest moments.
Awards and His Legacy
Joan Colom received many important awards for his photography. In 2002, he won the National Photography Prize from Spain's Ministry of Culture. He also received the Golden Medal for Cultural Merit from the Barcelona city council. Other honors included the National Visual Arts Prize and the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2006.
In 2011, Joan Colom gave a large part of his photographic collection to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC). This means his important work can be seen and studied by many people for years to come.
