Joan III of Burgundy (born May 1 or 2, 1308 – died August 10 or 15, 1347) was also known as Joan of France. She was a powerful noblewoman who ruled as the Countess of Burgundy and Artois from 1330 to 1347. She also became the Duchess of Burgundy by marrying Odo IV, Duke of Burgundy. Joan was the oldest daughter of King Philip V of France and Countess Joan II of Burgundy.
Joan's Life Story
Joan married Odo IV, Duke of Burgundy in 1318. This marriage helped settle an important agreement between their families. Joan then became the Duchess of Burgundy.
In 1330, Joan became the Countess of Burgundy and Artois in her own right. This happened after her mother passed away. Being a countess "in her own right" meant she inherited the title directly.
Joan and Odo had one son:
- Philip
Sadly, Philip died before his mother. Because of this, Joan's titles went to her grandson, Philip I of Burgundy, when she passed away in 1347.
