Joan Lavender Bailie Guthrie (1889–1914) was a brave British woman who fought for women's right to vote. She was also known by the name Laura Grey. Joan was an important member of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), a group that worked hard to achieve equal voting rights for women.
Early Life and Activism
Joan Lavender Bailie Guthrie was born in 1889 in Caistor, a town in Lincolnshire, England. When she was 18 years old, she joined the WSPU. This group believed that women should have the same right to vote as men.
In 1912, Joan took part in a protest where windows were broken to draw attention to the suffragette cause. For her actions, she was sent to HM Prison Holloway.
Life in Prison
While in prison, Joan continued her activism. She helped create a book of poems called Holloway Jingles. This book was published by the Glasgow branch of the WSPU. One of her poems, To D.R., is thought to be for another suffragette named Dorothea Rock.
To protest their imprisonment and demand their rights, many suffragettes, including Joan, went on a hunger strike. This meant they refused to eat. Because of this, some suffragettes were force-fed, which was a very difficult experience.
For her courage and determination during these protests, Joan received a special award. The WSPU gave her a Hunger Strike Medal 'for Valour', meaning 'for bravery'.
Life After Prison
After she was released from prison, Joan started a new career as an actor. Her first performance on stage was in a play called "The forty thieves." She performed this show at the Lyceum Theatre in London in 1912.
Later Years
Joan Lavender Bailie Guthrie passed away in 1914 when she was 25 years old. A poem about her was published in the "Daily Herald" newspaper in June 1914. This poem was written by Anna Wickham.
