Joan Ponç (born November 28, 1927 – died April 4, 1984) was an artist from Catalonia, a region in Spain. He was a key member of an important art group called Dau al Set. This group was known for trying new and exciting ways of making art.
Early Life and Art Beginnings
Joan Ponç was born in a part of Barcelona, Spain, called Sarrià. His parents were Gumersindo Pons and Dolors Bonet.
When he was a teenager, from 1940 to 1942, Joan went to a boarding school. It was called Colegio Salesiano San Antonio de Padua de Mataró. During this time, he discovered his passion for painting and decided he wanted to be an artist.
Joining the Dau al Set Group
In 1946, Joan Ponç had his very first art show all by himself. It was at a place called Sala Arte de Bilbao. Here, he met other artists and writers who would later join the Dau al Set group. These included Joan Brossa, J.V. Foix, and Arnau Puig.
Over the next few years, Joan worked closely with other famous Catalan artists. Some of these were Modest Cuixart and Joan Miró. The Dau al Set group was very active for a while. However, the group eventually stopped working together in 1954.
Even after the group ended, Joan Ponç kept creating and showing his artwork. He continued to present his art until 1980.
Later Life and Legacy
On April 4, 1984, Joan Ponç passed away. He had a heart attack at his home in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France.
Four days later, his body was brought back to Spain. He was buried near Barcelona, in a town called La Roca del Vallès. This was also where his home and art studio were located. Joan Ponç is remembered as an important artist who helped shape modern art in Catalonia.
