Joan Riley grew up in a place called Hopewell, Richmond, in St. Mary, Jamaica. She was the youngest of eight children. After her mother passed away, her father raised her. She went to school in Jamaica.

In 1976, Joan moved to the United Kingdom. There, she continued her studies. She learned about social work at the University of Sussex and the University of London.

Her Writing Career

Joan Riley has written four novels. Her first book, The Unbelonging, came out in 1985. This novel was groundbreaking. It was the first book by a Black woman to explore the experiences of Black people living in Britain.

Her writing often explores the lives and experiences of women from the Caribbean. She helps readers understand their journeys and challenges.

Awards and Recognition

Joan Riley has received special awards for her important work. In 1992, she won the Voice award. The next year, in 1993, she received the MIND prize for her novel A Kindness to the Children. These awards show how much her stories mean to people.
