Joan Veny i Clar, born on August 22, 1932, in Campos, Majorca, Spain, is a very important Spanish linguist. A linguist is someone who studies language. He is especially known for his work on the Catalan language, which is spoken in parts of Spain, France, and Italy. People consider him one of the most famous experts on Catalan dialects. Dialects are different ways a language is spoken in different areas. He wrote a key book called Els parlars catalans and helped create a huge project called the Linguistic Atlas of the Catalan Domain.

His Education and Early Work

Joan Veny i Clar is a retired professor of Catalan Philology from the University of Barcelona. Philology is the study of language in written historical sources. He also studied at universities in Louvain and Poitiers. In 1956, he earned his doctorate degree in Romance philology. His main research was about how different words are used in Catalan dialects.

Studying Catalan Dialects

Professor Veny's work in dialectology is very important for the Catalan language. He became famous after his book Els parlars catalans was published in 1978. This book explains the many different ways the Catalan language is spoken across all the areas where it is used. In the same year, he became a member of the Institute for Catalan Studies, a group that promotes Catalan culture and language.

He has also worked on old historical texts and the history of the Catalan language. He is especially interested in etymology, which is the study of where words come from. He has written many articles about Catalan linguistics, focusing on dialects, how language changes across different places (geolinguistics), and word origins. He has also studied words related to fish and fishing.

The Linguistic Atlas Project

Joan Veny i Clar leads a big research project called the Linguistic Atlas of the Catalan Domain (ALDC). This project, from the Institute for Catalan Studies, explores the diversity of Catalan dialects. He works on it with Lydia Pons i Griera. The project has many volumes and has been published since 1998. You can even look at it online! He also helps with other international projects that study how languages are used in different places.

Awards and Recognition

Professor Veny has received many important awards for his work. He has been given honorary doctorates from the University of Valencia (in 2008) and the University of the Balearic Islands (in 2016). Some of his other awards include the Creu de Sant Jordi (1997), the Medalla d'Honor de la Xarxa Vives d'Universitats (2013), and the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes (2015). There is even a school in his hometown of Campos named after him!
