Joan Veny i Clar was born in Campos, Majorca, on August 22, 1932. He is a famous linguist and dialectologist from Majorca. A linguist studies languages, and a dialectologist focuses on different ways a language is spoken in different places. Joan Veny is known as one of the most important experts on the Catalan language.

He wrote a very important book called Els parlars catalans. This book explains the many different ways Catalan is spoken across the Catalan Countries. He also worked with Lydia Pons on a huge project called the Linguistic Atlas of the Catalan Domain.

About Joan Veny's Life and Work

Joan Veny is now a Professor Emeritus of Catalan Philology at the University of Barcelona. This means he is a retired professor who is still highly respected. He also studied at universities in Louvain and Poitiers.

His Studies and Early Career

In 1956, he earned his doctorate degree in Romance philology. This field studies languages that come from Latin, like Catalan, Spanish, and French. His main research has been about the different ways the Catalan language is spoken. This area of study is called dialectology.

His book Els parlars catalans, published in 1978, was a big step forward. It brought together all the information about how Catalan varies from place to place. In the same year, he became a member of the Institute for Catalan Studies. This is an important group that promotes Catalan language and culture.

Research on Language History

Joan Veny has also worked on old historical texts. He helped publish a text from the 14th century about preventing illness. He also studies the history of the Catalan language. He is especially interested in etymology, which is the study of where words come from.

He has written many articles about Catalan linguistics. These articles cover dialectology, how language changes over geography (geolinguistics), and word origins. He has also studied words related to fish and fishing.

The Linguistic Atlas Project

Joan Veny leads a big research project called the Linguistic Atlas of the Catalan Domain (ALDC). This project studies the many different dialects of Catalan. He works on it with Lydia Pons i Griera.

The project started with Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit. It has resulted in a nine-volume work that began publishing in 1998. You can even look at parts of it online. He also helps with other international projects that study how languages are used in different places.

Awards and Recognition

Joan Veny has received many important honors. He has been given honorary doctorates from the University of Valencia (2008) and the University of the Balearic Islands (2016).

He also received the Creu de Sant Jordi award in 1997. This is one of the highest honors given by the government of Catalonia. In 2015, he won the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes, a top award for Catalan writers. There is even a school in his hometown of Campos named after him.
