Joanne Greenberg, born on September 24, 1932, is an American writer. She sometimes used the name Hannah Green for her books. She also taught anthropology at the Colorado School of Mines. For a time, she was a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician.

Joanne Greenberg is best known for her book I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. This book was published in 1964. It tells a story that is partly based on her own life experiences.
This popular novel was later made into a movie in 1977. It also became a play in 2004. Both the movie and the play have the same name as the book.
Early Awards and Works
In 1963, Joanne Greenberg received two important awards. She won the Harry and Ethel Daroff Memorial Fiction Award. She also received the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction. These awards were for her very first novel, The King's Persons.
The King's Persons was published in 1963. It tells the story of a sad event in history. This event was the massacre of the Jewish people in York at York Castle in 1190.
Books Made into Movies
Another one of Joanne Greenberg's books was also turned into a film. Her book In This Sign was published in 1970. This book was later made into a TV movie.
The TV movie was called Love Is Never Silent. It was part of the Hallmark Hall of Fame series. The movie was shown on NBC in December 1985.
