Joaquín Anselmo María Albareda y Ramoneda (born February 16, 1892 – died July 19, 1966) was an important Spanish leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Cardinal, which is a high-ranking official who advises the Pope. For many years, from 1936 to 1962, he was in charge of the Vatican Library, a very famous library in Vatican City. He became a Cardinal in 1962.
Early Life and Education
Joaquín Albareda y Ramoneda was born in Barcelona, Spain. His parents were Vicente Albareda and María Ramoneda. When he was 12 years old, in 1904, he joined the Order of Saint Benedict, a group of monks, at a place called Santa María de Montserrat.
On November 4, 1908, he officially became a monk and took the name Anselmo María. He became a priest on July 7, 1915. He stayed at the Montserrat monastery until 1921.
To continue his learning, he studied in Rome and Freiburg from 1921 to 1923. He learned about Palaeography, which is the study of old writing and ancient documents. He also studied about archives, which are places where important historical records are kept.
Work at the Vatican Library
After finishing his studies, Joaquín Albareda returned to the Montserrat monastery. He worked there as an archivist, managing historical documents, from 1923 to 1936.
On June 19, 1936, Pope Pius XI chose him to be the Prefect (or head) of the Vatican Library. This library is one of the oldest and most important libraries in the world, holding millions of books and ancient manuscripts.
In 1950, he was given an honorary title as Abbot of Santa Maria de Ripoll. This was a special recognition for his work.
Becoming a Cardinal
On March 19, 1962, Pope John XXIII made Joaquín Albareda a Cardinal Deacon. This meant he became a very important advisor to the Pope. On the same day, he stepped down from his role as Prefect of the Vatican Library.
A short time later, on April 5, 1962, Pope John XXIII named him Titular Archbishop of Gypsaria. This was another honorary title. He received his episcopal consecration (a special ceremony to become a bishop) on April 19, 1962, from Pope John XXIII himself. He then stepped down from this honorary archbishop title the very next day.
From 1962 to 1965, Cardinal Albareda took part in the Second Vatican Council. This was a major meeting of Catholic leaders from all over the world. He also helped choose the next Pope in 1963, when Pope Paul VI was elected.
Cardinal Albareda passed away in his hometown of Barcelona when he was 74 years old. He is buried at the Montserrat monastery, where he first became a monk.
