Jacques Marie Gaston Onfroy de Bréville (born November 25, 1858, died September 15, 1931) was a famous French artist. He was known by his pen name, Job. This name came from his initials. Job was a talented illustrator who created many pictures for books.

The Life of Job

Job wanted to study art at a special school in Paris. His father did not agree at first. So, Job joined the French army. Even in the army, he loved subjects about soldiers and his country. In 1882, he returned to Paris.

He finally joined the art school. In 1886, he showed his art at a big exhibition. People had different opinions about his work. Because of this, he started a career as an illustrator. He drew funny pictures for magazines like La Caricature and La Lune.

Illustrator for Children

Job became very well known for drawing pictures in children's books. He often worked with a writer named Georges Montorgueil. His colorful drawings helped make heroes like Napoleon I and Joachim Murat famous for young readers.

Job paid great attention to details. For example, in a book called L'Épopée du costume militaire français, he made sure the uniforms were drawn very precisely. This was true even in books made for kids.

Some of his most famous works include Murat, Le Grand Napoléon des petits enfants, and Jouons à l'histoire. He also drew pictures about the life of George Washington. Job was quite popular in the USA. He was part of a group of funny artists called the 'humoristes'. His art studio has been rebuilt at the musée de Metz for people to visit.

Special Awards

Jacques Onfroy de Bréville received a special award called the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. This is one of France's highest honors.
