Jobs, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jobs is a small, unincorporated community located in Hocking County, in the state of Ohio in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

The Story of Jobs

Jobs has a fascinating history tied to the coal mining industry in Ohio. It was once a busy place where many people worked and lived.

How Jobs Got Its Name

The community of Jobs was named after a very important person in the area: William Job (1843–1931). He was a well-known and successful person who ran several coal mining companies in the Hocking Valley region. Because of his influence, the community took his name.

Life in a Mining Town

In its early days, Jobs was a bustling coal mining community. It had several coal mines where workers dug for coal. To support the miners and their families, there were rows of houses, a school for the children, and even a post office. The post office first opened in 1890 and served the community until 1924. A train station was also a key part of Jobs, located on the Brush Fork Branch of the Hocking Valley Railway. This train line was vital for transporting the mined coal to other places.

A World Record in Coal Mining!

Jobs became famous for a short time because of an amazing achievement in coal mining. On May 13, 1892, the miners in Jobs set a world record! In just one single day, they managed to mine an incredible 4,888 tons of coal. This huge amount of coal filled 243 train cars. At that time, the mines in Jobs were owned by the Morris Coal Company. This record showed just how productive and hard-working the miners in Jobs were.

From Mines to Nature: Jobs Today

Over time, the coal mines in Jobs eventually closed down. The last company to operate the mines was the Sunday Creek Coal Company. They later sold the land to the state of Ohio. Today, the area is managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Instead of being a mining town, the land is now being transformed into a wildlife area. This means it will become a protected space for animals and plants to thrive, offering a natural habitat where the old mining operations once stood.
