Joe Allen was a basketball star even in high school. In 1962, he led his Carver Military Academy team to an impressive 28 wins and only 5 losses. They made it all the way to the state championship game. His team finished as the runner-up that year.

The very next season, in 1963, Joe led the Carver Challengers back to the IHSA state title game. This time, they won the championship! They defeated Centralia High School. Joe scored 51 points in the 1962 tournament. He averaged 12.8 points per game.

In the championship game, he had 18 points and 17 rebounds. Over eight tournament games, Joe made 50 out of 85 shots. This means he shot an excellent 59%.

In 1974, Joe Allen was honored for his amazing play. He was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame. Years later, in 2007, the Illinois High School Association named Joe one of the 100 Legends of the IHSA Boys Basketball Tournament. College Career: Bradley University

Joe Allen started at Bradley University in the fall of 1964. He had a knee surgery during his first year. Because of this, he had to wear a knee-brace for the rest of his time playing at Bradley.

Sophomore Season Success

In his second year, Joe became the starting center for the 1965–66 Braves team. They had a great season, finishing second in the Missouri Valley Conference with 20 wins and 6 losses.

Junior and Senior Years

As a junior, Joe continued as the starting center. His team finished fourth in the conference. They had a record of 17 wins and 9 losses. His best year was during the 1967–68 season. Joe was named a co-captain of the team. The Braves finished with 19 wins and 9 losses.

Amazing Records and Honors

During his three years of college basketball, Joe had 13 games where he scored 30 or more points. His highest score was 45 points against Southern California. This happened on December 9, 1966.

Joe also made history at Bradley. He recorded the first triple-double in Bradley Basketball history. A triple-double means getting double-digits in three different stats. On December 20, 1966, he had 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists against Oklahoma.

Joe led the nation in field goal percentage in 1967–1968. He made an incredible 65.5% of his shots. His uniform number, 31, was retired by Bradley. This is a huge honor, as only seven Bradley players have had their numbers retired. He finished his career with 1,752 points, which is third all-time at Bradley. He also had 865 rebounds, ranking him fourth.

After his playing career, Joe returned to Bradley. He served as an assistant coach from 1972 to 1977. In 2003, Joe Allen was named to the Bradley Basketball Team of the Century. This shows his lasting impact on the team.
