Álvaro José Arroyo González (born November 1, 1955 – died July 26, 2011), known as Joe Arroyo or El Joe, was a famous Colombian singer and songwriter. He was known for his amazing salsa and tropical music. Many people thought he was one of the best Caribbean music artists in Colombia and all of Latin America.

Discovering Joe Arroyo's Musical Journey
Early Life and First Steps in Music
Joe Arroyo was born and grew up in the Nariño neighborhood of Cartagena. From a young age, he loved to sing. He started performing with local groups like "Los Caporales del Magdalena" and "La Protesta." In 1971, he even recorded music with a group called "La Promiscua." Joe often sang in concerts in cities like Sincelejo, showing his talent from a young age.
Becoming a National Star
In 1971, Joe Arroyo got his big break. Julio Ernesto Estrada, who led the band Fruko y sus Tesos, discovered him. Joe then signed with the Colombian record company Discos Fuentes. With Fruko y sus Tesos, he recorded many classic songs, including "Tania" and "Manyoma."
He sang with Fruko y sus Tesos for ten years. Then, in 1981, Joe decided to start his own band. He named his band "La Verdad," which means "The Truth."
Joe Arroyo became very successful because he created a unique music style. He mixed different types of music like salsa, cumbia, porro, soca, and zouk. These styles came from Africa and the Caribbean. Some of his most famous songs are "Rebelión," "La Noche," "Tania," and "En Barranquilla Me Quedo."
Health Challenges and Final Years
Later in his life, Joe Arroyo faced some health problems. Because of this, he sometimes had to cancel his performances. There were even times when people thought he had passed away because he was out of the public eye. He also had to have surgery on his eyes.

Joe Arroyo passed away in Barranquilla on July 26, 2011. He had been in the hospital for almost a month due to health issues. His death was a sad moment for many fans.
His music and life continue to inspire people. From June to December 2011, a TV show called El Joe, la leyenda (The Joe, the legend) was broadcast. It was a soap opera based on his life story.
In 2011, the famous singer Shakira honored Joe Arroyo. She performed his song "En Barranquilla Me Quedo" at an awards ceremony. This was a special tribute to him. In 2013, a three-meter tall statue of Joe Arroyo was put up in Cartagena, Colombia. Even a new type of bee, discovered in 2014, was named after him: Geotrigona joearroyoi.
