Joseph Benson Mauldin, Jr. (born July 8, 1940 – died February 7, 2015) was an American musician. He was best known as the bass player for the early rock and roll band called the Crickets. Joe Mauldin first played a large upright bass. Later, he switched to an electric bass guitar, a Fender Precision Bass. After playing with The Crickets for several years, he became a recording engineer. This means he helped record music in a studio.

Early Life and Music
Joe Mauldin was born in Lubbock, Texas. When he was four years old, his parents divorced. While he was at Lubbock Junior High, he learned to play several instruments. He learned the piano, trumpet, and steel guitar.
In 1955, Joe joined his first rock band called the Four Teens. He recorded music with this band before he started playing with Buddy Holly.
Joining The Crickets
Joe Mauldin was one of the first members of the Crickets. The other founding members were Buddy Holly, drummer Jerry Allison, and guitarist Niki Sullivan. The Crickets became a very famous rock and roll band.
After Buddy Holly sadly passed away in 1959, Joe Mauldin continued to play. He played on and off with other original Crickets members. These included J.I. Allison, Sonny Curtis, Glen D. Hardin, and sometimes Niki Sullivan.
Awards and Recognition
Joe Mauldin received several important awards for his music.
- He was honored in the West Texas Walk of Fame in Lubbock.
- He was also inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. He was recognized as an original member of The Crickets.
- In 2012, Joe Mauldin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This was a special honor for him and the other members of The Crickets. They were added because many people felt it was a mistake not to include them when Buddy Holly was first inducted in 1986.
Later Life and Passing
Joe Mauldin passed away from cancer in Nashville, Tennessee, on February 7, 2015. He was 74 years old.
