Joseph Brazil (born August 25, 1927 – died August 6, 2008) was an American jazz musician and teacher. He played the saxophone and helped many other musicians. Joe Brazil was known for opening his home to local and touring musicians for jam sessions. He also taught jazz music at Garfield High School. He helped start the Black Music program at the University of Washington. He also created the Black Academy of Music in Seattle. Joe Brazil played on important jazz albums like Om by John Coltrane and Mystic Voyage by Roy Ayers.

Life Story

Early Life in Detroit (1927–1961)

Joseph Brazil was born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 25, 1927. In 1951, he bought a house in Detroit. He lived there with his brother and mother. Joe Brazil made a special place in his basement. He built a bar and put in a piano.

This basement became a famous spot for jazz musicians. Many talented artists came to play music together. These were called "jam sessions." Famous musicians like trumpeter Donald Byrd and saxophonist Sonny Red played there. Even the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane practiced at Joe Brazil's house. Some of Coltrane's practice sessions were even recorded there.

On September 25, 1958, a jam session was recorded in his basement. It featured musicians like John Coltrane and Joe Henderson. Joe Brazil's home was a true center for jazz music in Detroit.

Moving to Seattle (1961–2008)

In 1961, Joe Brazil moved to Seattle. He started working at Boeing as a tool maker. He continued his passion for music and teaching in Seattle.

Joe Brazil taught music at Garfield High School's Magnet Program starting in 1968. He also helped create the Black Academy of Music in 1967. This academy had great teachers like trumpeter Floyd Standifer.

Students at the University of Washington wanted Joe Brazil to teach there. He taught at the University of Washington from 1969 to 1976. He helped start the Black Music curriculum at the university.
