James Edward "Joe" Marston (born January 7, 1926 – died November 29, 2015) was a famous Australian soccer player. He made history by being the first Australian to play in a big game called the FA Cup Final. This happened in 1954 when he played for Preston North End.

Joe Marston: A Football Star
Joe Marston was 28 years old when he played in the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in England. Before becoming a professional player, Joe played for a team called Leichhardt-Annandale in Australia. He also worked as a painter and a lifeguard to earn money.
In 1949, a scout from England saw Joe play and invited him to try out for Preston North End. The club was so interested that they even paid for Joe's wife, Edith, to travel with him to England.
Joe started his time in England playing for the reserve team. But when another player got hurt, Joe got his chance to play for the main team. He became a very important defender for Preston North End. He played 154 games for the club.
Joe was so good that he was even chosen to play for a special team called the Football League side. This team played against the Scottish Football League XI. Even though he was very successful, Joe missed Australia. He decided to return home in 1956.
Playing for Australia
Joe Marston also played for Australia's national soccer team, known as the Socceroos. He played in international matches during tours by famous English and Scottish clubs. He even coached the national team for a short time while still playing.
Life After Playing
After his amazing career, Joe Marston and his wife, Edith, retired. They lived on the Central Coast of New South Wales in Australia. They always kept a strong interest in soccer.
Awards and Recognition
Joe Marston received many awards for his contributions to soccer:
- In 1980, he was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire).
- In 1988, he was added to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
- In 2000, he received an Australian Sports Medal.
- In 2008, he was given one of the first Alex Tobin Medals. This is a special award from the Australian Professional Footballers Association.
There is even an award named after him! The Joe Marston Medal is given to the best player in the grand finals of Australia's top soccer leagues, the A-League and the National Soccer League. In 2012, Joe Marston was featured on a postage stamp in Australia, celebrating famous Australian footballers.
His Passing
Joe Marston passed away on November 29, 2015, at the age of 89. He had been in poor health for some time.
