About Joseph Sanberg
Joseph Sanberg grew up in Southern California. He went to Servite High School in Anaheim. Later, he studied at Harvard University. He is Jewish.
Sanberg's Career and Companies
After college, Sanberg worked on Wall Street. He earned enough money to feel financially secure. However, he felt uneasy working in an industry that he said "totally divorced service from profit." This means he felt the work didn't directly help people. So, he decided to invest in new companies, called start-ups.
Aspiration: Banking with a Purpose
In 2013, Sanberg co-founded Aspiration, Inc. with Andrei Cherny. Aspiration is an online financial company. It lets customers choose how much they want to pay in fees for their checking and investment accounts. Aspiration also offers special investment funds. These funds are 100% free from fossil fuels, meaning they don't invest in companies that use coal, oil, or gas.
Investing in New Ideas
Sanberg was one of the first investors in Blue Apron. This company delivers ingredients and recipes to people's homes so they can cook meals. He also invested in IVY.com, which is described as a "social university."
Helping Others: Jefferson Awards Foundation
Sanberg is on the Board of Governors for the Jefferson Awards Foundation. This group helps over a million young people each year. It encourages them to volunteer and get involved in public service.
CalEITC4Me: Helping Families with Tax Credits
In 2015, Sanberg was a key leader in helping California start its own Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This tax credit helps working families with lower incomes. To support this, he started a program called CalEITC4Me.
CalEITC4Me is run by the Golden State Opportunity Foundation. This foundation studies ways to help Californians become more financially secure. CalEITC4Me helps working families understand and claim state and federal earned income tax credits. It also helps families find free services to prepare their taxes.
Working for Change
Sanberg has shown interest in helping people through public service.
Working for a Higher Minimum Wage
Sanberg is currently leading an effort in California. He wants to raise the minimum wage to $18 per hour. This would mean people earn more money for their work. Supporters have gathered many signatures for this idea. Sanberg believes that most people support raising the minimum wage.
