Joseph Weider (November 29, 1919 – March 23, 2013) was a Canadian businessman. He was a big name in the world of bodybuilding and fitness. Joe, along with his brother Ben Weider, helped create the International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB). This organization helps guide bodybuilding around the world.
Joe Weider also started famous bodybuilding contests like Mr. Olympia and Ms. Olympia. He published many popular magazines about fitness, such as Muscle & Fitness and Shape. Early Life and Career Beginnings
Joe Weider was born in Montreal, Canada. His parents, Louis and Anna Weider, had moved there from Poland. Joe started his journey in fitness very early.
In 1940, he published his first magazine, Your Physique. This magazine was all about bodybuilding. In the same year, he even made his own barbells from car parts in his family's garage. He later created many training plans, including the "Weider System of Bodybuilding."
Joe married Hedwiges "Vicky" Uzar, and they had a daughter named Lydia Ross. They later divorced in 1960. In 1961, Joe married Betty Brosmer, who was a very famous model. Betty worked with Joe and helped him write books about bodybuilding. Joe and his brother Ben worked together to build the International Federation of BodyBuilders.
A big moment for the Weider brothers was in 1968. They helped bring a young, unknown bodybuilder named Arnold Schwarzenegger from Austria to California. Arnold later became a huge star in bodybuilding and movies.
Weider's Nutrition Products
The Weider family started a company called Weider Nutrition in 1936. This company is thought to be the first to focus on sports nutrition. They created early sports foods like Tiger's Milk nutrition bars. Today, this company is known as Schiff Nutrition International.
Fitness Magazines and Books
Joe Weider's first magazine, Your Physique, changed its name to Muscle Builder in 1953. Later, in 1980, it became Muscle & Fitness. He published many other popular magazines, including Mr. America, Muscle Power, Shape magazine, Fit Pregnancy, Men's Fitness, and Flex.
Joe Weider also wrote many books. One famous book is The Weider System of Bodybuilding (1981). He also co-wrote a book called Brothers Of Iron with his brother Ben in 2006. In 1983, Joe was named "Publisher of the Year." In 2003, his publishing company, Weider Publications, was sold to American Media.
Later Life and Legacy
Joe Weider passed away on March 23, 2013, in Los Angeles. He was 93 years old. His work left a lasting mark on the world of fitness and bodybuilding.
Honors and Awards
In 2006, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was then the governor of California, gave Joe Weider a special award. Arnold had won the Mr. Olympia contest seven times and was helped by Joe Weider early in his career. Arnold said that Joe inspired him to get into bodybuilding and move to the United States. In the same year, Joe and Ben Weider received a lifetime achievement award from the Young Men's Hebrew Association.
