Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John "Little Joey" Ring (born in 1758 in Darenth, Kent, and died on October 25, 1800, in Bridge, Kent) was a famous English cricket player. He was known for his amazing skills on the cricket field during the late 1700s.

Who Was Joey Ring?

Joey Ring was one of the best cricket players from Kent in the late 1700s. He was also a huntsman, working for a person named Sir Horatio Mann at a place called Bourne. Joey originally came from the Dartford area in Kent.

What Made Him a Great Player?

Joey Ring was especially good at hitting the cricket ball on the "leg side" of the wicket. This means he was skilled at hitting the ball to his left if he was a right-handed batter, or to his right if he was left-handed. He was also a very good "single-wicket player." This was a type of cricket game where one batter played against one bowler, often with fielders. It showed off a player's individual talent.

Joey Ring's Cricket Career

Joey Ring played in many important cricket matches, which are called "first-class appearances." He played in 90 of these matches. His career in major games lasted from 1782 until 1796. After 1796, it seems he stopped playing in the biggest matches.

An Unfortunate Accident

Sadly, Joey Ring's life ended because of a cricket accident. In the summer of 1800, his nose was broken by a cricket ball during practice. His brother, George, was the one who bowled the ball. After this accident, Joey became very sick and had to stay in bed for several weeks. He passed away on October 25, 1800, from a fever that developed because of his injury.
