He wrote two big books about birds. One was called The Natural History of German Birds. The other was The Eggs of German Birds. His father, Johann Andreas Naumann, was also a naturalist. His brother, Carl Andreas Naumann, also studied birds.

A German group that studies birds named their journal Naumannia after him. Also, a type of bird, the lesser kestrel, is named Falco naumanni in his honor.

Who Was Johann Friedrich Naumann?

Johann Friedrich Naumann was born on February 14, 1780. His hometown was Ziebigk, near Köthen in Germany. His father, Johann Andreas Naumann, was a famous natural historian.

After going to school in Dessau, Johann Friedrich returned home. He spent his time studying many things. These included farming, plants, rocks, and especially birds.

Naumann's Work with Birds

Later in his life, Naumann focused mostly on studying German birds. In 1822, he published his big book, Naturgeschichte der Vögel Deutschlands. This means Natural History of the Birds of Germany.

This book had 13 volumes. Naumann himself created the detailed pictures for the book. He also wrote many other books about birds.

His Bird Collection

In 1821, Naumann sold his collection of birds. He sold them to Frederick Ferdinand, Duke of Anhalt-Köthen. The duke paid 2,000 Taler for the collection.

Naumann was then made the curator of the duke's collection. This collection was kept in the Ferdinandsbau. This building was part of Schloss (Castle) Köthen. The public could visit the collection starting in 1835.
