Johann Lukas Schönlein was an important German doctor and scientist. He was born in Bamberg in 1793 and lived until 1864. He studied medicine in different cities. Later, he taught medicine in places like Würzburg, Zurich, and Berlin. He even became the personal doctor for Frederick William IV, who was the King of Prussia.

His Important Work

Johann Lukas Schönlein made several important contributions to medicine.

Teaching in German

He was one of the first medical professors in Germany to teach in German. Before him, most professors taught in Latin. This change made it easier for more students to learn and understand medicine.

Discoveries About Diseases

Schönlein described a type of rash called purpura rheumatica. Today, this condition is known as Henoch–Schönlein purpura. It is a type of allergic rash that affects small blood vessels.

He also discovered what caused ringworm or favus. This was a skin infection caused by a tiny living thing called a parasite. He identified the specific fungus, which is now named Trichophyton schönleinii after him.

Naming Tuberculosis

In 1832, Schönlein was the first to use the name "tuberculosis" (in German, Tuberkulose). Before he named it, this serious lung disease was often called "consumption."

Animal Named in His Honor

The blackspot tuskfish (Choerodon schoenleinii) is a type of fish. It lives in the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean. This fish was named after Johann Lukas Schönlein to honor his contributions to science.
