Johann Peter Uz (born October 3, 1720 – died May 12, 1796) was a German poet. A poet is someone who writes poems. Uz was known for his thoughtful and often light-hearted poems during a time when a style called Rococo was popular in literature.

The Life of Johann Peter Uz

Johann Peter Uz was born in a town called Ansbach in Germany.

His Education and Early Career

From 1739 to 1743, Uz studied law at the University of Halle. While he was there, he became friends with other poets like Johann Gleim and Johann Nikolaus Götz. These poets wrote in a style known as Rococo, which often focused on beauty, nature, and gentle themes.

Together with Johann Nikolaus Götz, Uz translated some ancient Greek poems called odes (a type of lyrical poem) written by a poet named Anacreon. This translation was published in 1746.

Working in Law

In 1748, Uz started working as an unpaid secretary for a legal group called the Justizcollegium. He held this job for twelve years. Later, in 1763, he became an assessor (a type of legal advisor or judge) for the imperial court of justice in Nuremberg. He continued to advance in his legal career, and by 1790, he became a judge.

Today, there is a monument dedicated to Johann Peter Uz in the Ansbach Court Garden. It helps people remember his contributions as a poet and his work in the legal field.
