Johannes Linnankoski (born Vihtori Johan Peltonen on October 18, 1869) was a famous Finnish writer. He wrote many plays and novels. He was a big part of the "Golden Age of Finnish Art," a time when Finnish artists created amazing works. Linnankoski's most well-known book is a love story called The Song of the Blood-Red Flower, which came out in 1905. His stories often explored big ideas like feeling guilty, facing consequences, and finding forgiveness. He passed away on August 10, 1913.

Johannes Linnankoski was born in a place called Vakkola, in Askola, Finland. He was very involved in the cultural life of the Eastern Uusimaa region. He helped start important things that made life better for people.

For example, he was one of the people who helped create a bank in Porvoo. He also worked to set up schools where Finnish was taught. At that time, many schools taught in Swedish. Linnankoski also started daily newspapers in Finnish, like Uusimaa. This was the first Finnish-language newspaper to be published outside of the biggest cities in the Uusimaa area.

Linnankoski married Ester Drugg in 1899. They had four children together: Marjatta, Salama, Touko, and Urmas. All his children were born with the family name Peltonen.

In his later years, Linnankoski moved to Helsinki for medical care. He was not feeling well and passed away in 1913 at the age of 43.

In 1938, a museum was opened to honor Linnankoski. It is located near a sauna building where people believe he was born.

Books Made into Movies

Many of Johannes Linnankoski's books have been turned into popular movies. Two of the most famous films based on his works are The Milkmaid and The Song of the Blood-Red Flower.

The movie The Milkmaid was directed by T. J. Särkkä. The film The Song of the Blood-Red Flower was directed by Mikko Niskanen. This particular story was so popular that it was also made into three different movies in Sweden. These Swedish versions were directed by Mauritz Stiller, Per-Axel Branner, and Gustaf Molander.
