John Alexander Henderson (born December 21, 1841 – died August 10, 1904) was a lawyer and politician in Florida. He lived in Tampa for many years. He was the brother of William Benton Henderson.
John Henderson studied law with James Gettis. Mr. Gettis helped raise him after John's father passed away.
Early Life and Service
During the American Civil War, John Henderson served in the army. He was part of the same company as James Gettis. After the war, he became involved in politics.
Mayor of Tampa
In 1870, John Henderson was elected Mayor of Tampa. As mayor, he helped lead the city.
Later Career in Tallahassee
In 1876, he moved to Tallahassee, Florida's capital city. His second wife was the daughter of George Taliaferro Ward.
John Henderson worked as the main lawyer for the Florida Central & Peninsular Railroad Company. This was a big job helping a railroad business. He also helped manage the West Florida Seminary. This was a school that later became Florida State University.
His daughter, Jennie, married Albert A. Murphree. John Henderson also taught law to another person named William Himes. He later served as a state senator. A state senator helps make laws for the state. He was also appointed to be a US Senator when Wilkinson Call's term ended.
